Local History Group

The Local History Group was formed in 1983 by Sheila Allen and Kay Coutin and has continued to attract new members. They are a mixture of experts and those who enjoy things historical.

The Group meet from September to April usually on the third Wednesday of the month in Sharpthorne Church Hall in Station Road at 7:45pm and visitors are always welcome.

They have a varied programme of talks and charge £2.50 a head (£15 for the whole year) to cover the cost of the speaker and coffee and biscuits. During the summer months they arrange visits to places of historical interest and have a Christmas party in December.

The Group have:

  • done surveys of the 1841 tithe map
  • hedge dating
  • recording of tombs in the churchyard
  • made listings of the parish registers
  • surveyed local barns.

They are currently studying the development of Sharpthorne from the 1700s into the present day community.

All the photographs, documents and maps of the parish, from the early 1900s, that have been collected by the Local History Group are kept in the Local History Archive
